The journey of oil from extraction to production, shipping and finally consumption was at the epicenter of the educational forum organized by isalos.net, on Wednesday, 18 October 2023. This is the first in a series of lectures that will take place throughout the new academic year.
The event entitled “Black gold: The journey from production to consumption, and the role of the shipping industry” took place in the welcoming space of Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and was sponsored by Tototheo Maritime. Captain Kostas Kanellopoulos, Managing Director of Nereus Shipping, S.A., was the speaker of the event. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Giannis Theodoropoulos, editor-in-chief of Naftika Chronika.
During the lecture, Cpt Kostas Kanellopoulos expanded on the geological characteristics of black gold, as well as the operation of refineries, making special reference to the Jamnagar refinery which places India in the map of oil producers and renders it regulator of developments. Emphasis was placed on the risks related to the cargo, which have led to stricter inspection standards in vessels under SIRE 2.0 and TMSA.
In his closing remarks, Cpt Kostas Kanellopoulos summarized the main routes of different types of tankers, noting that new countries are entering the map of oil flow, such as Brazil and Guyana. Finally, he mentioned that RES will lead to the decrease of the use of oil. Specifically, he stressed that “The glory of oil will not be witnessed again, the glory of tankers will not be seen again in the long term, although the tanker market will be maintained on a good level in the short-medium term”, commenting that maritime investments should be directed to ships such as LNG, LPG carriers and LCO2 carriers.
